Program!
Librarians and information specialists serve the needs of a richly diverse population in an ever changing and increasingly complex information environment. The University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Library and Information Studies (GSLIS) has been educating students from New England, the nation, and the world for over forty years. Graduates are placed at the center of intellectual life in a wide range of communities, including schools and universities, villages and cities, corporations and non-profit organizations.
The program for the Master of Library and Information Studies degree requires 42 credits, 18 in required core courses, and 24 in electives, six of which may be taken in courses outside library science when relevant to the student’s specialization; one course with a major paper requiring significant independent research; and a written comprehensive examination. MLIS specializations include academic, public, and special librarianship, information technology, and school library media specialist. The MLIS degree is fully accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). The school library media certification program is also accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and approved by the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE).
The Information Literacy Instruction Certificate (ILIC) is a 15-credit post-baccalaureate certificate, which may be taken as part of the M.LI.S. It is also recommended for professional librarians who want to update their skills, as well as for assistants who would like to teach others how to use the library resources effectively, efficiently, and ethically.
The GSLIS also offers a teacher certification program (TCP) with a specialization in school library media for graduates with M.L.I.S. degrees. Students in this program must complete those courses needed to meet NCATE and RIDE standards.
