Enterprise & Advanced Technology

The Enterprise and Advanced Technology area focuses on enterprise development resulting from the introduction and implementation of new technologies. 

These technologies should lead to improvement of the economic climate in Rhode Island and the region. 

The focus area accomplishes this objective through academic degree programs, basic and applied research and outreach programs. 

The major objective of this focus area is to strengthen the Rhode Island economy by creating new businesses and jobs.

Outreach Program Description:
To expand the presence of small businesses in the neighborhood, and to call attention to the needs of local entrepreneurs, the Woodlawn/University of Rhode Island (URI) COPC and its partners will establish the Woodlawn Business Association and Manufacturing Alliance (WBAMA).
Outreach Program Impact Statement: The alliance is expected to provide local businesses with a stronger voice at the local and State levels, increase contact among businesses, and create a greater awareness of local and regional business conditions.

Outreach Program Description: This internship program places seniors and advanced juniors from the College of Business Administration in sites around the state. Interns put in 120 hours at a site during a regular semester.

Outreach Program Description: The Rhode Island Transportation Research Center (RITRC) organizes some civil engineering transportation workshops (or symposiums) for the practical transportation issues, e.g., pavement management system and Superpave asphalt technology, etc. It typically features a virtual "who's who" of internationally prominent leaders in each topic. It aims at a broad audience including policy makers, decision makers, small- and large-industry leaders, technical managers, engineers, technical staffs, and public works personnel. The intent is to provide the state-of-the-art information and technology transfer, to provide access to resources and expertise helpful in the solving practical problems, and to improve industry efficiency and productivity.
Outreach Program Impact Statement: It provides recent advances in the science and engineering of transportation engineering and public works and practices.

Outreach Program Description: The program is concerned with computational simulation of solid and fluid systems.  Such simulation involves the development of appropriate models of the problem, and results are determined using numerical methods on a computer.
Outreach Program Impact Statement: Computational modeling has become an essential tool for industries across the nation and world.  Our center can develop simulations to determine stress, strain, displacement, temperature, fluid flow, etc. within complex engineering systems.  These simulations supply our supporting industries and government agencies with important information needed to solve complex problems for advancing technology.

Outreach Program Description: Development of a Customer Satisfaction and Service Quality Measurement and Tool for the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority
Outreach Program Impact Statement: Will assess the relative impact of RIPTA customers' ratings of individual service attributes on overall satisfaction. Ultimately, this method of measuring satisfaction and service quality is expected to form the basis for standardizing RIPTA's future assessments and tracking its success in meeting customers' expectations for the elements of service delivery comprising the attributes of rider satisfaction. It will also shape RIPTA's performance measurement protocol to guide the targeting of resources for improving service delivery and customer satisfaction.

Outreach Program Description: The Woodlawn/University of Rhode Island (URI) COPC will be working with members of a statewide consortium to bring an Employment Network Center to the Woodlawn neighborhood of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Five Employment Network Centers are being established throughout the State as part of the Network Rhode Island Initiative.
Outreach Program Impact Statement: Visitors to the Woodlawn center will participate in employment and career-identification classes and take tests that match their skills and interests with potential jobs. They also will set career goals; attend workshops on resume building, interview techniques, and appearance; and participate in job-shadowing programs.

Outreach Program Description: The Executive Action program provides team-building experiences for members of organizations that want to improve their communication, problem solving and teamwork skills Outreach Program Impact Statement: The program responds to the needs of organizations to develop the values of teamwork and communication.  It responds to the need by many organizations to develop the values of teamwork in their organization in an experiential way, that is by using an action-learning model that involves all members in a group problem-solving scenario.  Companies come back for several years to allow their staff to improve their teamwork skills.  Since the program is voluntary and paid for by the organization or firm, it is assumed there is value added or the organizations would seek other training.
