Organizations & Committees

Student Nurses Association - URI

University of Rhode Island College of Nursing’s Student Nurse Association (SNA) is a pre-professional association that represents students preparing for the future as professional nurses.  The association engages in a shared governance approach that encourages health related discussions, health advocacy and interdisciplinary collaboration among students across the university.
            Among its many activities within the university community, SNA emphasizes health promotion, healthy lifestyle and health equity issues.  Its members seek to act as change agents and role models for other university student and the State of Rhode Island.  Students in SNA have the ability to make professional contacts and provide an opportunity for networking with professionals from diverse backgrounds.

SNA meets twice a month, alternating Wednesday(12pm) and Friday(12:15pm) afternoons in Room 106. The meetings usually do not exceed 30 minutes, and are based primarily on discussion of new business, so if you are interested in coming to a meeting, it is highly suggested to familarize yourself with our last meetings minutes!

Rhode Island Student Nurses Association

Students from all nursing schools in RI are eligible to join the RI Student Nurses Association. The State SNA allows students to network with students from around the state; holds a yearly state convention; and offers opportunities for leadership and service.

 

National Student Nurses Association (NSNA)

The National Student Nurse Association (NSNA) is a pre-professional organization for nursing students. NSNA offers many programs, leadership opportunities and benefits such as discounts on products, books and services. A national convention is held yearly with nationally known speakers, workshops, exhibits and social events. Imprint, NSNA's official magazine, published by and for nursing students is included in the yearly dues.

 

URI Graduate Student Association

The Graduate Student Association (GSA) exists to support the efforts of graduate students as members of the URI community. The GSA is an organization maintained by and for the graduate students at URI. Full and part time students in all graduate degree programs are members of the GSA, which is supported by the graduate student tax paid with tuition and fees. The goal of the GSA is to enhance the academic, intellectural and social opportunities of its members. Thethe GSA offers financial assistance to graduate student groups and individuals through its Assistance Program, Conference Attendance & Paper Delivery, Thesis Binding, Legal Assistance and Child Care Assistance.

 

Sigma Theta Tau International

Delta Upsilon Chapter Nursing Honor Society

In 1980, the College of Nursing recieved a charter as Delta Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI). The purposes of STTI are:

 

  • To recognize the achievement of scholarship of superior quality.
  • To recognize the development of leadership qualities.
  • To foster high professional standards.
  • To encourage creative work.
  • To strengthen commitment to the ideals and purposes of the profession.

 

To be eligible for membership, students must have completed one-half of their nursing credits, have a GPA of 3.0 or better and rank in the top 35% of the class. For further information regarding the application procedure and membership contact the faculty advisor, Tracy MacSwain.

 

Nurses Christian Fellowship

The Nurses Christian Fellowship (NCF) is an organization of nurses and nursing students with a focus of integrating Christian faith and nursing. Meetings are held at the College of Nursing to better prepare nurses to assist persons spiritually, psycho-socially and physically as they face crises. NCF helps the student or nurse to be a whole person who relates to God, self and others in a healthy way. The receptionist can refer interested students to the appropriate faculty advisor for this organization.

 

URI Student Senate

The Student Senate is the legislative arm of the student body at URI. Its primary goal is to represent the student body in its relationship with administration and faculty. The College of Nursing has one elected Senate seat amont the 20 representative seats from the University's Academic Colleges. A student interested in becoming a student senator representing the CON should contact the Student Senate Office in the Memorial Union.

 

College of Nursing Committees

The administration and faculty of the College of Nursing believe that student participation in governance is a prerequisite to professionalism.

Therefore, we strongly encourage student representation on our standing and ad hoc committees. Below is a listing of the standing committees that encourage student representation, along with a statement of their purpose:

 Curriculum

It is the responsibility of the Curriculum Committee to examine in depth, changes to the curriculum, new programs or new course proposals. Recommendations are then presented to the faculty for review and decision.

 Search

The Search Committee is responsible for the search and recruitment of qualified faculty candidates.

Educational Resources Committee

The Educational Resources Committee:

 

  1. oversees the audio-visual equipment, software
      and services in the Media Center,

  2. coordinates the integration of computer technology
      into the College and

  3. serves as laison between the College and the main
      Library by assessing resources and interpreting needs.

Program Evaluation

The Program Evaluation Committee designs, implements, maintains, and summarizes the evaluation activities of the College.

Marketing and Recruitment Committee

The Marketing and Recruitment Committee coordinates, implements and evaluates marketing and recruitment strategies for the College.

Student Affairs Committee

The Student Affairs Committee fosters activities that improve the quality of student life within the College of Nursing. This includes advising, assisting, and/or planning, coordinating and implementing student-related activities sponsored by the College, such as the Job Fair, Graduation and the Student Nurses’ Association (SNA).
