Speaker: University of Rhode Island Psychology Professor Lisa Harlow has been invited to speak at the University's Graduate Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 19. Harlow joined the URI faculty in 1985 and maintains a rigorous academic life in her areas of specialization of statistics and research methodology, and health psychology. She is passionate about teaching and has mentored scores of undergraduate and graduate students each year, and has served as a major professor for 33 graduate students.
The main focus of her scholarship, leadership, and teaching is on increasing interest, retention, performance, and diversity in quantitative science. Her scholarly work has been published in more than 70 top journals and has received more than $7,000,000 in funding, including a collaborative 7-year National Science Foundation institutional transformation grant on Advancing Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics; and a 5-year NSF grant on Quantitative Training for Underrepresented groups.
Throughout her tenure, Harlow has been involved in projects to develop learning communities for women and science, including an Instructional Development Program seminar series on teaching science more effectively.
