Chinese

The University of Rhode Island offers a major and a minor in Mandarin Chinese Language. In order to complete the B.A., students must complete at least 30 credits total in Chinese (excluding CHN 101/111 and 102/112). Students must complete six credits in Chinese
literature and civilization, at least three of which must be taken at 400 level, and must complete
one additional 400-level Chinese course.

In addition, students must also take six credits in Chinese/Asian history, Chinese/Asian politics or Chinese/Asian philosophy offered through other departments in English. Students must choose these six credits from the courses listed below, which can be counted towards the General Education requirement, or from other courses on Chinese culture and civilization as approved by the program director:

The requirement for a minor is 18 credits, 12 of which must be at the 200-level or above.

Beginning level: Focuses on fundamentals of grammar and pronunciation; exercises in reading, writing, and conversation.

Intermediate level: Focuses on development of facility in reading narrative and expository prose; exercises in grammar, listening comprehension, and speaking.

Chinese Interational Engineering Program (IEP)students must also complete a 6-month professional internship in China, for which they earn six credits total for CHN 315 & CHN 316.

Students from any major who wish to accelerate their learning and achieve a professional level of Mandarin proficiency should consider applying to the Chinese Language Flagship Program, one of only nine such programs in the country funded by the National Security Education Program.

Study Chinese this summer at URI and Zhejiang University in the URI Chinese Summer School! Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Intermediate Intensives offered. Adults of all ages welcome!  No prior study of Chinese necessary!
