CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2012
The Africana Studies Program is a vibrant, unique part of the URI community. Providing an important area of study of African and African American social, political and historical development, AAF contributes to the rich diversity of our campus. Many people from various African nations call New England (Including Rhode Island!) home. Nigeria ,Kenya, Liberia, Ghana and many other African nations are part of our community. Africana Studies is as relevant today as ever.
Bachelor of Arts
Background The African & African American Studies program (AAF) was established in 1972 resulting from students' perceived needs for a more inclusive curriculum dealing with people of African descent. In 1998 the Rhode Island Board of Governors voted to give the Program Department status. The Program is now Department and offers a major (B. A. African and African American Studies). African American Studies is, in both content and analysis, interdisciplinary. Its objectives are to explore and evaluate the social, cultural, economic, personal and instructional conditions of peoples of African descent.
Employment Opportunities for Graduates
Interdisciplinary programs in African & African American Studies prepare students for professional careers in education, business, civil service, communications, industrial relations, international development, urban planning and public service. The major seeks to prepare graduates for both public and private sector careers by stressing the development of analytical skills in the learning process. The program also provides an excellent foundation for anyone who wishes to pursue graduate study leading to an M. A. or Ph.D., or professional training such as law or urban planning.
