Description: URI's Environmental
Education Center is seeking a qualified individual
to help oversee the operation of three summer
camping programs involving up to 200 youth,
ages 5-17. Primary pre-season responsibilities
include hiring staff including program coordinators,
counselors, teen expedition leaders, junior
counselors, and waterfront and infirmary
staff; overseeing Summer Camp Open House;
attending camp and job fairs; making advanced
program arrangements such as camp site reservations,
arranging for guest speakers, etc.; ordering
supplies and equipment; updating staff handbooks;
assisting in the training of summer coordinators;
giving camp tours; and upholding American
Camping Association standards. Primary in-season
responsibilities include assisting with staff
training, troubleshooting, looking out for
the safety of program participants, assisting
with check-in and check-out, attending staff
meetings, helping with rental van logistics,
overseeing the waterfront, and otherwise
assisting with the day to day operations
of the camp programs. |

Education Center is situated on 2,300 acres
of forests, wetlands, and old farmland—the
W. Alton Jones Campus. Dedicated to environmental
education, the Center has been offering quality
day and residential programs for over 30
years. The residential Earth Camp for ages
9-13 includes
a knotty pine dining lodge with field stone
fireplaces, hardwood floors, and five meeting
rooms. The six cabins have electricity, bunk
beds, hot showers, and lavatory facilities.
Each cabin sleeps between sixteen and twenty
campers. Teen Expeditions for ages 12-17
include backpacking, kayaking, canoeing,
and rockclimbing/rappelling throughout New
England. Farm and Forest Day Camp for ages
5 to 11 includes animal and garden care,
exploration for fields and forests, and a
campout for older campers. All camps utilize
a private waterfront. |

Qualifications: Bachelor's
degree in education, environmental studies,
outdoor recreation, or a related field; experience
teaching children; previous experience in
a supervisory capacity at a camp preferred.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and
organizational skills. Microsoft Word experience
helpful. Applicants must have a valid driver's
license. Red Cross certification or an acceptable
equivalent in Standard First Aid and CPR
is required. (Or you must demonstrate the
ability to obtain these certifications before
the summer.) Familiarity with natural history,
environmental stewardship, and conservation

EXPEDITIONS ASSISTANT COORDINATOR--currently

Description: URI's Environmental Education Center is seeking a
qualified individual to assist the Teen
Expeditions Coordinator in carrying out the
Expeditions summer program which consists of
seven 5 to 7-day canoeing, kayaking,
rockclimbing/rappelling, and backpacking
trips. The Assistant Coordinator provides
leadership for the Expeditions staff (leads
some staff training sessions, observes and
evaluates leaders, assists with discipline
and group dynamics issues) and assists the
Teen Expeditions Coordinator with logistical
support. This includes maintenance and
preparation of equipment, food supplies, and
transportation of campers (12-passenger
extended van)
and gear (pick-up truck and canoe trailer). Requires assisting with pick-up and
drop-off of rental vans. Visiting groups out-of-state at
remote locations may be required. The Assistant Coordinator leads one to three trips during the
summer, fills in for Expedition Leaders in
emergencies, assists with other W. Alton
Jones Summer Camp activities when requested,
fills in for the Expedition Coordinator in
her/his absence, and shares responsibility
for end-of-summer inventory and storage of
equipment. May also involve scouting and
planning for future trips. Sunday through Friday workweek while camp is in session.

evening activities at the campsite, and leading

In cooperation with other leaders, provide
24-hour supervision to groups of 10-12 teens,
participate in preparation and clean-up of
equipment, transport campers to and from
sites, and perform other duties as required

Description: URI's
Environmental Education Center is seeking
qualified individuals to teach and lead
campers, ages 9-13 during seven six-day
residential camping programs. Earth Camp Counselors may teach up to ten themes: Farm Camp,
Night Owls, Forest Frenzy, Waterworlds,
Creature Camp, The Art of Nature, Outdoor
Skills, Night Camp, Marine Madness, and
Eco-Mania.
Earth Camp Counselors oversee safety
and teach or lead ecology, natural science,
conservation, sensory awareness, canoeing,
no-trace camping and survival skills,
campfires, group games, evening programs,
skits, and arts and crafts.
Earth Camp Counselors will also
assist Earth Camp Assistant Counselor
training and development by having Assistant
Counselors shadow them, observing counselor
lessons, and providing feedback.
Earth Camp Counselors also supervise
campers in cabins overnight and at mealtimes
and during free times on a rotating basis. Other responsibilities are to assist with waterfront
supervision; help create a supportive
community environment for campers and other
staff; assist with camp preparation,
clean-up, opening day check-in, and parents
programs; and instill in each camper an
appreciation for the natural environment. |

EARTH CAMP
ASSISTANT COORDINATOR/SENIOR COUNSELOR |

Description: URI’s Environmental Education Center is seeking
a qualified individual to assist in the
coordination of an environmental overnight
summer camp program for approximately 100
campers each week for 7 weeks of six-day
camp programs (Sunday – Friday). Responsibilities: Play
an active role in the 2-week staff training;
assist in the supervision of 17 camp
counselors/program specialists and up to 10
junior counselors each week, including
enrichment programs and performance
evaluations and monitoring of program
quality; assist with the staff scheduling
and program logistics, facilitation of staff
meetings, and handling of discipline and
homesickness issues; organize and coordinate
the daily evening programs with the
assistance of the staff; supervise and
direct the weekly resource staff; supervise
the organization of pack-outs and equipment;
schedule recreation time duties; facilitate
merchandise sales on Sunday and Friday and
complete a weekly inventory; perform office
duties as necessary; serve as coordinator in
his/her absence; teach or cover cabin duty
for one or two weeks; fill in for
naturalist/counselors in emergencies; other
duties as required.
Camp themes highlight ecology,
natural history, and outdoor skills with
campers ages 9-13.
All programs emphasize environmental

farmland—the W. Alton Jones Campus.
Dedicated to environmental education, the
Center has been offering quality day and
residential programs for over 30 years. The
residential Earth Camp facilities include a
knotty pine dining lodge with field stone
fireplaces, hardwood floors, and five
meeting rooms. The six cabins have
electricity, bunk beds, hot showers, and
lavatory facilities. Each cabin sleeps
between sixteen and twenty campers. Outdoor
Skills campers sleep in platform tents when
not on their backpacking trip. |

Qualifications:
Completed at least two years of a degree
program with a concentration in education,
environmental studies, outdoor education, or
a related field; equivalent of two
seasons’ experience working with children
in a camp or educational setting.
Excellent communication,
interpersonal, and organizational skills.

driver’s license. Red Cross certification or an acceptable equivalent in Standard First
Aid and CPR is required. Familiarity with natural history,

DAY CAMP
COUNSELOR |
| |
Description: URI's Environmental
Education Center is seeking qualified individuals
to teach and lead campers in a summer day
camp program for 60 children each week ages
5-11. Responsibilities: supervise 8-12 day
campers; teach outdoor lessons in sustainable
agriculture, humane animal care, early American
history, organic gardening, cultural history,
forest ecology, wetland ecology, and outdoor
skills. Day Camp Counselors participate in
cleaning classroom areas, animal feeding
and care, cleaning stalls, gardening, etc.
The day starts at 8:00 am with animal chores
and preparation for the campers. Campers
arrive at 8:30 am and stay until 3:30 pm.
During the program, students are divided
into groups of eight to twelve with one Counselor.
Most groups will also have a Junior Counselor
to assist. At the Woodvale Farm Day Camp,
campers age 5-8 help out on the farm, work
in the gardens, prepare food, participate
in farm demonstrations, and go on hikes.
At the Eco-Zone Day Camp, campers age 8-11
participate in activities involving forest,
field, and freshwater wetland ecology and
go on a Thursday night camp out. All campers
go on hikes, make crafts, and swim. After
the campers leave, there is a clean-up period
followed by gardening, farm projects, and
animal feeding and cleaning chores. The day
ends at 4:30 pm. Supervising campers while
riding the shuttle bus to and from camp is
required for some staff members. |

unique Nettie Marie Jones Nature Preserve.
The Nature Preserve has woodland and swamp
trails, fields, wildflower meadows, brooks,
and a classroom building all adjacent to
a 75-acre lake. |

required. Enthusiasm, excellent communication

WATERFRONT

Description: URI's Environmental
Education Center is seeking a qualified individual
to coordinates all aspects of an eight-week
free-swim waterfront program on a 75-acre
freshwater lake including direct supervision
and training of all waterfront staff and
of all campers, ages 5-17 during waterfront
aquatic activities. Provides direct supervision,
training, and on-going practice and enrichment
sessions to two lifeguards and over 30 camp
staff members when engaged in water activities.
Responsible for the camp's compliance with
all waterfront regulations and policies.
Must provide water safety and canoe (small
craft) safety training to staff and campers
and lead waterfront festivals and other special
events as needed. The waterfront manager
assists the camp coordinators with other
camp activities when requested and prepares
a year-end written evaluation of the waterfront

CAMP NURSE/NURSE'S ASSISTANT |

Description: URI's Environmental
Education Center is seeking a qualified individual
to be a 24-hour on-site liaison for an off-site/on-call
Registered Nurse in the operation of a busy
residential camp infirmary for three summer
camping programs involving up to 200 youth,
ages 5-17. Primary responsibilities are for
a residential camp with 110 campers ages
8-13. Duties include observation of children
while they take authorized medication, record
keeping, assessing seriousness of injuries,
providing first aid treatment, reassuring
campers and dealing with homesickness, and
communicating with parents. Assists R.N.
in providing training and guidance on medical
and safety procedures to 35 camp staff members.
R.N. is on site for several hours each day
and on call 24 hours each day. |

EMT certification and previous experience
working with children and/or camps preferred.
Work schedule: Sunday noon to Friday afternoon
with some time-off arranged during the week.
