Due to limited space, entrance requirements and/or and amount of interest in certain majors, you may be offered admission to URI but not to your first choice major. What does this mean for you? Can you switch majors once you are enrolled at URI? For the vast majority of majors, the answer to this question is a resounding “yes!”
You will receive guidance and support through University College, our academic advising college here at URI, and you will learn about the requirements for different majors. You may have to enroll in specific courses and earn a minimum grade point average in those courses in order to switch to the major you desire, but many, many URI students successfully change majors (sometimes multiple times!).
Several majors (Pharmacy, Nursing, and Kinesiology) do have much more limited access, so switching into one of these majors is highly unlikely. If you are interested in a career in the pharmaceutical industry, we encourage you to explore the variety of careers that are open in that field through other majors – our Pharmaceutical Track in our Chemical Engineering major is a particularly popular alternative to our Pharm.D. program.
We also offer a wide variety of other health and life science majors (i.e. Nutrition and Dietetics, Biomedical Engineering, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, and Microbiology to name a few) that may appeal to students who are not admitted to their first choice major selection. of Pharmacy, Nursing, or Kinesiology.
If you already have been admitted or you still are in the application process and would like change your intended major, please fax (401-874-5523) the Admission Office the following information:
If we have not yet issued a decision on your initial application, you will learn of our decision regarding your intended major in your acceptance letter.
If you already have been offered admission, we will notify you by email regarding your request for a change of major.
Along with our student-led tours (approximately 90 minutes), you will see listings for Information Sessions (45 minutes), which are hosted by a member of the Admission staff. Information Sessions are followed immediately by a full tour of campus. We are unable to offer individual interviews.
If you are interested in our Pharm.D. program, special Information Sessions are held in Fogarty Hall (Room 107) on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 11am. from September 22 to December 9, 2008.
